Description |
Big Momma's Room was painted after her family had cleaned up her room when she was at the hospital after falling ill, so this was what she returned to. In the series of paintings and drawings that Huckaby created, this room is featured in nearly every composition. It holds great meaning as a center of Big Momma's world. in it you see the elements of who she was as a person; early photographs of family members on the wall, wig stands, the center of her world - her bed - and the warm and welcome couch for her visitors. This single room evolved into the dwelling space occupied by Big Momma Hallie during the declining years of her life. Big Momma's bedroom became Big Momma's House. The single room became the kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom and bathroom. Huckaby spent hours (almost daily) with Big Momma Hallie in the room. His drawings and paintings document stages of her declining years. The frame for this work also has significance. According to Huckaby, while he was painting this work he visualized a type of frame long before he knew how he would make it. He had been purchasing wood recovered from old, demolished houses. he could hear the "old wood talk" and it spoke to him "like a person would". He could see the beauty in these boards. They were still full of life, and had a history to the extent they are things that could be thrown away, overlooked, or discarded or they could be rejuvenated, re-presented, or otherwise brought back to life. Sedrick Huckaby (1975) earned BFA at Boston University in 1997, and an MFA from Yale University in 1999, he participated in the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center residency and traveled the U.S. and Europe studying old master paintings. Huckaby has been invited to participate in a number of residencies and fellowships including a Davison Family Fellowship from the Amon Carter Museum of American art, an Elaine De Kooning House residency and an Art for Change residency in New Delhi, India. He holds the position of Associate Professor at The University of Texas at Arlington and is represented by the Philip Martin Gallery in Los Angeles and Talley Dunn Gallery in Dallas |
