Description |
Edition 43/100 Zvi Milshtein (1934-2020) was a Romanian-born French painter and printmaker. He fled his hometown prior to the events of WWII and continued his studies in painting while briefly diving into sculpture while in Europe. His artworks are done in a painterly style and usually depict the human form in lively settings. Milshtein was also a known author, publishing his first artistic book in 1965. "Portrait de Femme" displays a central figure surrounded by a sea of blue. The title suggests the subject is a woman, with short hair, big eyes, and a sharp jawline. The woman is wearing a red shirt which contrasts to the blue colorant surrounding her. Her features are downturned and give the print a sad undertone. Texture is applied to the figure's hair and neck. The dark blue oval framing the figure gives the impression of burnt paper. A newspaper printed in dark blue ink encloses the figure. The words on the newspaper are illegible. The smearing and blotting of ink across the newspaper gives the impression that the paper has been printed several times. |
