Description |
The bronze sculpture Angel of the Annunciation was most likely modeled in clay, which lends itself to an immediacy of expression. The clay version is the first step in the casting process that results in a finished bronze piece. This figure is energetically modeled, and although not a large piece, the proportions of the Angel's body outreach human scale: A lengthy neck extends an eager head with a mouth ready for speaking, and exaggerated hands emphasize their urgent gesture. These hands are a clue to the figure's significance as they point to both heaven and earth. Indeed, the figure's linear structure, with vertical lines enforced in both garment and wings, suggest the heavenly and earthly orientation of the angel and her message of God becoming man. The formal elements of the sculpture successfully express the meaning of the figure. - Carrie Keasler, Intern Fall 1997 |
