Description |
Small landscape drawing depicting Tule Canyon; smaller rolling hills are dotted with small shrubs and trees, while large red clay cliffs jut up and out from the landscape. Artist Josephine Oliver sketched this view of the color of Tule Canyon caught by sunlight with her teacher, Frank Reaugh, in eastern Swisher county. Many artists have been inspired by Tule Canyon's colors and unique formations carved by erosion. Josephine Oliver (1908-1991) took up painting as a teenager. Her talent quickly caught the attention of her teacher, Frank Reaugh, who hired her as his assistant. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, she accompanied Reaugh and his students on sketching trips to Big Bend and other scenic regions of West Texas. A skilled violinist as well as a painter, Oliver eventually went on to a decades-long career as a member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. |
