From the series "My Town: Photographs of Tyler, Texas" from subheading "Along the Main Streets" Landscape photograph of a gas station along Glenwood Blvd. by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. A stand for Fresh Tyler Roses is in the foreground, to one side of the gas station. Cade's Building Materials is visible in the background. After graduating from high school, Artist Judy Bankhead moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas. It was there that she took classes from Russell Lee who had formerly been a photographer for the Farm Security Administration during the 1930s. While he was director of the Tyler Museum of Art, Ron Gleason met Bankhead in 1973 and eventually he asked the artist to make periodic visits to Tyler and develop a personal document of photographs about her hometown. She agreed and that led to an effort of three years and more than a dozen visits of at least a week each. She returned with a fresh eye and new, mature skills. As she worked, she found a town that had changed in her absence. |
