From series "My Town: Photographs of Tyler, Texas" from subheading "Taking Care of Business" Photograph taken inside Broadway Square Mall in Tyler, TX. Photographer Judy Bankhead is visible in the reflection of a sign in the middle of the foreground. After graduating from high school, Artist Judy Bankhead moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas. It was there that she took classes from Russell Lee who had formerly been a photographer for the Farm Security Administration during the 1930s. While he was director of the Tyler Museum of Art, Ron Gleason met Bankhead in 1973 and eventually he asked the artist to make periodic visits to Tyler and develop a personal document of photographs about her hometown. She agreed and that led to an effort of three years and more than a dozen visits of at least a week each. She returned with a fresh eye and new, mature skills. As she worked, she found a town that had changed in her absence. |
