Description |
Woodcut on Japanese paper with overpainting. This piece is a modernist rendition of the classic still life painting. There is a glass vase of a huge magnolia. To the left is a lemon. They are both sat on a table. The background is an intense dark red. All of the linesand crosshatching throughout the painting are thick with expression, a stark and refreshing contrast to the traditional, realistic still life painting. Artist David Bates' artistic style could be described as sophisticated primitivism, using as his subjects neighbors, friends, wildlife and plant life found near his home at Grassy Lake and along the Gulf Coast. |
